SPECIFIC™ CKD Heart & Kidney Support food has a uniquely high omega-3 EPA and DHA fatty acid content from fish oil. In dogs with heart failure, EPA helps maintain muscle mass and appetite, normal heart rhythm, blood pressure, and platelet aggregation. In dogs with kidney failure, omega-3 fatty acids help slow the progression of kidney failure.
In patients with heart failure, as a response to the reduced volume of blood ejected by the heart, sodium excretion is decreased, resulting in sodium and water retention in the body. The low sodium content helps break the closed fluid exchange loop (hypertension and edema). This is extremely important for patients with kidney and liver failure, as well as in cases of heart failure.

Limiting phosphorus content is necessary to prevent hyperphosphatemia and slow the progression of kidney failure.
The reduced protein content with its high biological value reduces azotemia in dogs with kidney failure. In dogs with kidney failure, it reduces the likelihood of hyperammonemia and hepatic encephalopathy. High biological value proteins meet the dog's body's needs for essential amino acids.

The limited protein content reduces the levels of oxalates, cysteine, and urates in the urine.
